The Amazing QR Race

Wondering how to integrate technology into your high school math lessons? Try this idea, generously shared by a co-teacher in Bismarck, ND. She created a QR Code Amazing Race for her students.

To create QR codes, I use www.QRStuff.com, because it allows you to create them in color – perfect for color-coding by difficulty level or class period. Super easy to do and only takes about 15 seconds.

To scan QR codes, students need to have a web-enabled device with a camera, and then an QR scanning app for that device. Yes, Chrome Books can scan QR codes – it’s just a bit awkward because of the front facing camera.

The Stand Up Game

Last week I watched this short video clip from the Teaching Channel on the “stand up game.” It is a simple, no-prep strategy – my favorite kind – so I tried it myself in a co-taught high school English lesson.

We broke the students up into two groups and each teacher worked with a group, doing the same, or parallel, activity. We asked all students to stand up. Then we told them that we needed to brainstorm some examples of rich replacement words for the word “good,” (which we were seeing too much of in the writing.) We told students that as soon as they shared an example they could sit down.

Students quickly volunteered to share so that they could sit down. One student told me she was motivated to share quickly before someone else took her idea. We had much better participation than if we had simply asked for volunteers.

In the future, I might adapt this by having students form mixed-readiness pairs and do the work as a partnership. I love that I can use this for anytime that I want a multitude of contributions and some out-of-seat time.
