Small Group Management

Small group work is a staple in most classrooms, especially co-taught classes. Small groups might be differentiated by readiness level, activity or cooperative learning roles. No matter what the purpose, teachers want an easy, smooth way to have students transition.

I use a color-coded approach to small group organization and it works really well! I purchased red, yellow, green and blue wrist bands. (You can print your school name or inspirational messages on the bands.) We handed each student a band, intentionally choosing who would receive each color. (The activity was color-coded by difficulty level, known only to the teachers.) Students were directed to wear the band on their wrists.

It was so simple to then group and regroup by color band, to call on students with a specific color, ask students to go to a colored poster, etc. Students could easily remember their assignments – no more “Where am I supposed to be?” or “What am I supposed to do?”

Many of you have asked me where I found the wrist bands. Here's a link.

10 Questions to Consider When Lesson Planning

At a recent workshop, educators worked together to create a list of questions that might help in planning for co-taught lessons. While not a comprehensive list, here are ten questions that I thought were helpful but a bit atypical for lesson planning. What might you add to this list?

  • How can the lesson be extended for students who want to challenge themselves?
  • How can we extend this learning to other parts of the day or other areas of study?
  • What executive function skills might be necessary and how will we support them?
  • How can we make real world connections?
  • How can technology be used to transform the learning?
  • How can we make tech resources developmentally appropriate and authentic?
  • How do we help students be accountable for participation and production?
  • What resources will most impact our students’ learning?
  • What outside resources can be used to make the learning authentic?
  • What questions can be asked to spark students’ curiosity?
