Many teachers are handed scripted lessons that are part of a packaged curriculum and asked to follow them with fidelity. Some of these lessons are wonderfully written and provide solid instruction (especially for students with a new teacher.) Other lessons are too canned and dry, leaving students bored and unattentive.
I have been working with a school that recognized the need to boost engagement in their writing program, while still wanting to use it with fidelity. Using Robert Marzano’s four categories of engagement (emotion, efficacy, interest and importance), I developed an overlay – a chart that suggests simple strategies that can be integrated into the existing curriculum, without losing fidelity. Teachers will be able to pick and choose the ideas that fit their style, and then look at this overlay while they are prepping for a lesson or when a lesson seems to be putting their students to sleep.
While our original intention was to use this for writing, most of the ideas are generic enough that they can be used across the curriculum. You can access a copy of the Boosting Engagement overlay, with embedded links to more detail explanations, here.
