My co-teachers and I agree – today’s lesson was a winner! Tying into our growth mindset theme, we provided the students with a Brain Growth Mission project. They had to work in teams to read and follow directions closely and construct the tallest building possible out of limited materials.

Students were given printed directions and told that they would not get help from the teachers – they had to work together to figure it out. While it was difficult for us to step back and not intervene, we let the students experience the struggle and success of figuring it out.
The most satisfying part of the lesson was listening to the students debrief their experience. Students felt the task was very challenging and yet they realized that the challenge led to more learning than if it had been a much easier task. Students also recognized that inattention to directions caused errors and setbacks. Their insights were rich with understanding to carry forward into the school year.
