High school co-teachers Tim Christensen (math) and Joe Svejda (special education) impressed me with their lesson activator today. Knowing that students would be given a challenging problem solving task in geometry, they started the lesson by introducing the concept of passive struggle and productive struggle. Students were in groups of three or four and were directed to brainstorm examples of what both might look like. Tim then called on each group to share out an example and place it in one of the two columns.
As the lesson moved forward into the problem solving task, it was easy to see that the discussion prompted students to demonstrate productive attitudes and behaviors - a growth mindset.
